Moss is not just cosmetic. It holds moisture against the tiles, chokes your gutters and breaks up the roof surface a little more every frost. We remove moss carefully, treat what is left behind and, because we are roofers rather than a cleaning franchise, we can fix the slipped tiles and tired pointing we find underneath on the same visit.

Why Moss Ends Up on Forth Valley Roofs, and Why It Matters

Our climate does most of the work. Damp air, mild winters and shaded north-facing slopes give moss everything it needs, and concrete tiles with a weathered surface give it something to grip. Most of the mossy roofs we see in Alloa, Sauchie and Tullibody are on the shaded side of the house, often under trees, and the moss has been building for years.

Left alone, moss causes real problems. It holds water against the roof covering, and every hard frost that water expands and lifts a little more of the tile surface. Clumps break off and wash into the gutters, where they block downpipes and send rainwater over the edge and down the walls. On older roofs, thick moss can even lift tiles enough to let wind-driven rain underneath.

If your gutters are already overflowing with moss and debris, that is usually the first symptom homeowners notice. Clearing the roof and the gutters together deals with the cause and the symptom in one visit.

How We Remove Moss Without Damaging the Roof

The wrong way to clean a roof is to blast it. High-pressure washing can strip the surface off concrete tiles, force water under the covering and shorten the roof's life in the name of making it look better. That is why we do not pressure wash roofs at all, and why we work from roof ladders or a tower rather than walking the tiles.

On most roofs that means the bulk of the moss comes off by hand with scrapers and brushes, followed by a treatment to deal with the spores and lichen left behind so the growth is slower to return. The moss is bagged and taken away, and the gutters, valleys and downpipes are cleared as part of the job. Waste removed from site, as it says on the car.

Here is the real advantage of using a roofer: moss hides problems. Slipped and cracked tiles, worn ridge pointing, failed flashings around the chimney. A cleaning company sees them and leaves. We can price the small repairs on the spot, usually while the ladders are already up, so you are not paying twice for access.

  • Moss scraped by hand, not blasted
  • Treatment for algae, lichen and spores
  • Gutters, valleys and downpipes cleared
  • All moss bagged and removed from site
  • Slipped tiles and pointing repaired same visit
  • Roof condition report in plain language

Keeping the Moss Off

No treatment keeps a Scottish roof moss-free forever, and anyone who promises that is selling something. What we can honestly say is that a properly cleared and treated roof stays clean for years rather than months, and that a few habits slow the regrowth right down: keep the gutters clear, cut back overhanging branches that shade the roof, and deal with anything that keeps the surface damp.

When we quote, we will tell you how your particular roof is likely to behave. A sheltered, tree-shaded slope in Dollar will green up faster than an open roof in Clackmannan, and it is better you hear that from us before the work than discover it after. For most homes, an occasional check and gutter clear is all the follow-up needed.

Roof Cleaning Questions

Why should moss be removed from a roof?

Moss holds moisture against the roof covering, and repeated freezing breaks up the tile surface over time. It also washes into gutters and blocks them, which sends rainwater down your walls. Removing it protects the covering, keeps the gutters working and lets a roofer spot small faults before they become leaks.

Does pressure washing damage roof tiles?

It can, and that is why we do not pressure wash roofs at all. High-pressure washing strips the weathered surface off concrete tiles and can force water under the covering. Every roof we clean is done with scrapers, brushes and a gentle treatment. If a roof will not suit cleaning at all, we say so rather than damage it.

How much does roof cleaning cost in Alloa?

It depends on the size and pitch of the roof, how thick the moss is, the access needed and whether repairs are wanted at the same time. A small bungalow is a different job from a large two-storey with difficult access. We look first, then give you a free written quote with no obligation.

How often does a roof need cleaned?

Most roofs around Alloa and Clackmannanshire stay clean for several years after a proper clear and treatment. Shaded roofs under trees green up faster than open ones. We will give you an honest idea for your own roof when we quote, and an occasional gutter clear in between keeps the worst of it away.

What happens if you find damage under the moss?

We tell you, show you photos, and price the repair separately in writing. Slipped tiles, cracked ridge pointing and tired flashings are common finds under thick moss. Because we are roofers, most small repairs can be done on the same visit while the access is already in place. There is never any pressure to go ahead.
